Camas-Washougal Community Chest assisted a total of 15 local non-profits this past year, with an emphasis on those providing health and welfare programs or opportunities for children. This local fundraising effort has been in existence since 1946 thanks to citizens in Camas and Washougal who have supported Community Chest both privately and through their businesses. The goal of topping $60,000 has been met the past several years due to the generosity of Camas and Washougal donors, both large and small. This past year a soccer outreach program and a community center in a Washougal low-income housing complex were assisted for the first time. Other organizations supported during the most recent campaign include Inter-faith Treasure House, Camp Currie Youth Camp, Loaves and Fishes and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Friends of the Camas Community Center received assistance with swimming lessons and camp sponsorships. Children’s Home Society was helped at its East County Center in Washougal.
The Camas-Washougal Community Chest's top donors include the Georgia Pacific Foundation as well as the mill employees, Camas Public School employees, Exterior Wood Inc. and Lacamas Community Credit Union staff and friends. Other generous donors are employees of Pendleton Woolen Mills, Hewlett Packard Corporation and its employees, Waste Connections, Inc. and the David Moss family. A tax-deductible donation to Community Chest benefits worthwhile organizations with funding that stays in Camas and Washougal. Businesses or individuals wishing to donate to this year’s fund drive can do so with information from the Community Chest web site, www.camaswashougalcc.com, or by way of the mailing address: PO Box 960, Camas, WA 98607. For more information, contact Jerry Moss at 834-3312.
The all-volunteer board of directors for Community Chest includes Jerry Moss, president; Mike Nerland, vice president; Bob Howe, treasurer and Terri London, secretary. Other board members are Monte Brachmann, Linda Dietzman, Dave Pinkernell, Caroline Mercury, Barb Baldus, LaDene Mattson, Mary Mabry, and Ken Kline. Members of the Friends of the Camas-Washougal Community Chest include Nancy Viuhkola, representing Georgia Pacific; and Marilyn Boerke for the Camas School District.
