Author, Kilong Ung Speaks About his Book "The Golden Leaf" at the May Luncheon Event
Please join the Camas-Washougal Chamber of Commerce for the Luncheon event on Thursday, May 20th at Camas Meadows Golf Course. The doors will open at 11:30 am for a networking, with the program beginning at noon. The cost is $15 per member, and $20 for non-members and guests. Attendees must RSVP at least 24 hrs before the event.
The luncheon speaker will be the Author: Kilong Ung. He survived the Cambodian genocide between 1975 and 1979. The genocide killed two million Cambodians. His grandmother, parents, and youngest sister were starved to death. As a boy slave, Kilong was forced to work thirteen hours a day, seven days a week, and 365 days a year, and he was given very little food to eat. He was a leaf at the mercy of the wind. Miraculously, he escaped death multiple times. While two million leaves disintegrated, he persevered; he was a Golden Leaf.
He escaped Cambodia on foot in 1979, came to U.S., graduated from Reed College, earned a master’s degree from Bowling Green State University. He is now an online banking software engineer at Fiserv. Thirty years after his escape, he published his memoir Golden Leaf, A Khmer Rouge Genocide Survivor.
