Join the CW Chamber of Commerce for our January Chamber Luncheon. This month's luncheon features guest speakers Mike Nerland, Superintendent of the Camas School District and Mike Stromme, Superintendent of the Washougal School District. They will be presenting the annual "State of the Schools" address regarding issues facing education in East Clark County, specifically Camas and Washougal Schools.
As Camas and Washougal continue to grow, new businesses and homes are developed in our area bringing new students to our schools. Camas Superintendent Mike Nerland and Washougal Superintendent Mike Stromme will address how they’re responding to and planning for the facilities needs to continue to provide quality education in our growing communities.
Camas Superintendent Mike Nerland Bio:
Mike has been an educator for thirty-two years and began his career as a social studies teacher and basketball coach at a very small high school in Wyoming. Mike began his career in the Camas School District twenty years ago as principal of Lacamas Heights Elementary School. After six years at Lacamas he returned to his secondary roots and was principal of Camas High School for three years, opening the new Camas High School in 2003. Mike was honored to be offered the superintendent position for the Camas School District and has served in that position since 2005.
Mike is a member of Camas/Washougal Rotary and serves on the Camas-Washougal Community Chest Board. He also serves on the City of Camas 2035 Steering Committee. Mike has been a member of the Camas-Washougal Chamber Board of Directors, including a term as President. Mike is also very active in the Washington Association of School Administrators. He currently serves as Chair for the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Superintendent’s Advisory Committee as well as a member of the WASA Executive Board and Legislative /Finance Committee.
Washougal Superintendent Mike Stromme Bio:
Dr. Mike Stromme joined the Washougal School District as superintendent in July 2015. Stromme was formerly Associate Superintendent for Teaching and Learning in the Vancouver School District. He has a rich background of experience that includes instruction, facility use planning, budgets, professional development, partnership engagement, and strong communication skills. Stromme previously served as the interim Superintendent for the Green Mountain School District and Associate Superintendent and Chief Information Officer for the Vancouver School District. He also served as principal, associate principal and was a teacher for eight years before moving into district leadership.
Dr. Stromme’s goal in his first year with Washougal is to learn about the district by spending time with staff, teachers, and principals, and working to build relationships with community partners. He is deeply immersed in the school construction projects which are underway as a result of a voter-approved capital facilities bond.
Dr. Stromme and his wife Erin, a teacher in Vancouver School District, have three sons, two currently attending Western Washington University (Go Vikings!) Dr. Stromme is an avid runner and enjoys spending time pursuing outdoor activities, including boating and hiking.
Doors open at 11:30am for networking, with the program beginning at noon. The cost is $20/member or first time guest and $25 for non-member.
